80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Atheistic views
The meaning of life is to experience it.
As every person is different and hold different values dear, a variety of meanings of life can be achieved. To some, the meaning of life is to love, to create meaningful relationships. For others, it is to understand the world and the universe.
We don't have direct access to the real meaning of life. But whatever it is, it's a good guess that the Minds on the other side of Singularity have a better chance of achieving it, so the Singularity is the interim meaning of life. You don't have to know what the meaning of life is in order to work towards it.
For almost any ultimate goal - joy, truth, God, intelligence, freedom, law - it would be possible to do it better (or faster or more thoroughly or to a larger population) given superintelligence (or nanotechnology or galactic colonization or Apotheosis or surviving the next twenty years). It's the sheer utility of the Singularity, the way all goals converge to it, that gives me confidence that the Singularity is probably the best way to serve an unspecified ultimate goal, even if I willingly admit that I don't know what it is.
The more intelligent you are, the better your chance of discovering the true meaning of life, the more power you have to achieve it, and the greater your probability of acting on it

you have seen the wrong side of the picture, life is the easiest way man can handle that's why he has given this, otherwise u never know what's after life.....and no one knows except those they don't' have life, if they could have tell you then u wouldn't say that life is hard:), the meaning of life is that ur soul has got some points with it when u born, u have to keep that points maintain till you die, if it's less then u are in hell, if it's more then u are in heaven:D

The meaning of anything is defined by its goals.
Goals exist on personal level and general level.
Your goals may be to find happiness. The degree in which you will feel this, depends on the degree in which elements in your life are in agreement/harmony with your desires.
Psychologically, you can say that one will experience peace and happiness when their "outer world" matches their "inner world". Goal of life is to make them into agreement.
To explain, wanting to understand the world, is an effort to make your inner world in agreement with your outer world (to understand the world, is to understand yourself).
And wanting to change, is an effort to make your outer world in agreement with your inner world.
Nature's goals are to enforce its laws, anything harmoneous and consistent with them, will experience 'peace', rest will experience stress, destruction, hardship..
Social processes are similar to chemical processes on a lower level.. the essence is the same, stability and harmony and there will be stride and hardship until everything has stablize in harmony, everything has become one.
For humans, I think their goals (unconcioussly) is to become God. God is made in man's own image (not other way around). We want to become obiscient, omnipotent, all knowing, all controlling, everywhere and nowhere, everything and nothing. Technological developens desired and accepted are all judged towards that goal.
Assuming darwinism, and evolution, turning bugs into complex intelligent beings, you may ask where this 'eternal' process will lead to.. when will this evolution stop, when will all our desires be satisfied, and all our suffering end?.. it will be (virtually) when we have become perfect, .. this some call God.. then they put a beard on him and give him other human traits, and it turns into a joke, but that's a different subject :)
May I add that happy people in todays imperfect world, are disruptive to the goals in life? Because not happiness, but unhappiness is the best motivation towards betterment and perfection. :)
