I cannot speak for other conservatives, but I believe in the following.
Traditional family values
Lower Taxes
Fiscally responsible government
Less government intrusion into my life
Personal responsibility
Empowerment rather than entitlement
Honesty
Integrity
Loyalty
Fidelity
Patriotism and love of country
This is just a sampling of what I believe as a conservative. Unfortunately the current crop of leadership types in the federal government who call themselves conservatives are anything but. For this reason I am an independent rather than republican or democrat. I look for the same qualities in individuals that I aspire to on a personal level. It is a sad fact that neither major party represents my views adequately today. People need to wake up, no matter what they believe and discover the painfully evident truth that it is time for a change. The parties have become interested only in expanding their own power bases at the expense of the people. Then they seek to keep us divided with the conservative/liberal attack strategies and too many of us are willing accomplices. We are all Americans, we do not have to agree with each other, but we do not have to destroy each other either. It is time to stop playing the game by their rules and level the playing field back in favor of We The People.
bgc613: Only Republicans commanded during the war in Vietnam? I guess you have never heard of John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, both Democrats, both presidents during the Vietnam era. If you are going to make blanket statements at least try to get your facts straight.

Depends on the conservative.
There are social conservatives who believe in:
Life, not abortion
Marriage between 1 man and 1 woman.
There are political conservatives.
This is the Reagan and Gingrich wing of the Republicans.
We believe in smaller government, lower taxes, personal responsibility.
There are fiscal conservatives.
They believe in lower taxes and generally focus on money issues. They are usually liberal republicans or libertarians.
The two can be inclusive or exclusive. Bush is a social conservative, but not really a political conservative.
I am all three. Read my 360 page to see more about conservatism. Learning this is a process and cannot be explained in a single answer.

A conservative is suppose to be for small government. Usually they would be for low spending but haven't the last couple of administrations. Pro-life is the common stance for convervatives. They lean towards a Reaganomics which is a system to give large tax breaks to the highest earners and then it will trickle down to the middle and lower class. Another name for it is trickle down economics. Usually the stance for a conservative is that things are fine the way they are and change isn't needed.

Freedom from a huge bureaucratic, inefficient, corrupt government. Not every politician is corrupt, but common sense tells us that those who favor more government tend to live off the government (politicians included).
The Liberal will say conservatives do not care for the poor and are full of hate, but statistics tell us otherwise. Every conservative I know is heavily involved with charities and giving, and some of the Liberals I know expect the government to do it. The problem is, government tends to be self serving. Some people just cannot be trusted with money. Neither party is immune.

They believe in a strong central government, pro-weapon. anti-gay, anti-abortion, they generally incorporate religion and politics together, a horrible mix BTW.
Their Republican party has a much more troublesome history than that of the Democrat. Examples: Nixon and the Watergate break-ins, George W. Bush and Iraq, all of the presidents that commanded the war in Vietnam were Republican, etc etc.
Their party members are 99.9% in the southern U.S.
They are usually sexist (why they hate Hilary Clinton)
Racist (Need I say more?)
Support corporations like Big Tobacco
Pay little attention to internal problems such as health care, taxes, etc.
That's basically a Conservative/Republican American.
The worst political party ever devised.

Well I am not a con. I am a neocon.
So I think that democracy is our greatest export.
A government that governs least, governs best. And we have set a wonderful example in Iraq- they practically do not govern. I believe in open borders. I think it is good for business.

That's a little harder to answer, because there's a schism in US conservatism.
There are religious-conservatives who believe in God. All thier decisions and positions are predicated upon that belief.
There are nationalist-conservatives who believe in thier country, and want it to be as prosperous and powerful as possible.
There are conservatives who simply dislike change.
