the answer is a long one so I highly recomend this link even has demonstrations to do with the kids

Because the thunder, I assume you mean thunder and not lightning, is not being absorbed by much and is bouncing off of the surrounding terrain. Rain absorbs sound and that is why so call dry lightning can be heard for miles.
