It is a symptom of a deeper problem with society. Instant gratificationism. This is seen through much of our society in general. Many Americans, about the same percentage, are deep in credit card debt. People that are fat are fat because they want to eat food and they are busy working or just being lazy to not get in the proper exercise that they need to get in order to eat so much. Americans work much more than any other country in the world, remember this when you are criticizing Americans for not exercising. Many are too busy working... In short, because they eat too much and don't exercise enough.

Why, because all the meals we intake are super sized, we eat off bigger plates with more food on it, most people grew up with parents saying finish your food on your plate basicly forcing us to finish when we were already full, and now as adults we finish everything plus we are forcing our children to do the same without thinking.
A lot of families are always on the run and always want everything fast and easy which means drive through or none healthy foods cooked at home, It's not only McDonald's burger king etc.. most kids are too busy playing PS2, Xbox, or watching all the 300 cartoon channels on TV instead of being out and playing and the adults watching 500 channels on TV or on their butt on the computer.
As a society we are working more hours driving longer commutes, already beat from work and commute have to deal with the families, by the time everything is done its already too late for a workout of some sort.

I would assume that a majority of the obese in the U.S. are that way because of a combination of factors, such as:
Working at a desk or cubicle keeps one's physical activity limited. The job itself can be time consuming, requiring food to be speedy (and thus unhealthy, unless the employee thought ahead to bring a healthy, ready meal.) Some people are just pooped after getting home from a long day at work and want to relax, eating food and watching TV.
Another thing is that we as American's are more interested in VALUE than HEALTH. Go to a Buffet some time. People are going to eat more than what sates them because they want to get their money's worth.
Impatience/Lazy. People who can afford it will go get unhealthy food because it's faster and doesn't require effort to make themselves.
Lack of Exercise. Seriously. Tons of people probably live in places where they don't feel safe outside their door. Also, they may be self concious about their current body and not want to be seen in public with it.
Driving: Most city infrastructures have a large work force who commute over 5 miles to work, requiring driving as opposed to more healthy forms of transportation.
Computers/TV/Video Games: While some games are getting more active, in the past these enjoyable past times have not required much in the way of activity.
Parenting: Parents are becoming less able to control their children, being more worried about being their friend than a responsible parent. It is necessary to control their diet, and tell them why. Send children outside to play, don't keep them indoors and let them play video games all the time.

Because a lot of slim people have this thing where they burn calories easily! Gosh! You are being so critical for fat people! My mom is fat because her family did this to her! Depression is one thing, food is another! I am pretty fat, and it's because I don't burn calories easily! *grits teeth* They can lose weight, but most people don't, and I don't know why. It's a heritage thing, if your mom was fat you are likely to be fat too.

Because the phrase "whatever feels good" used so often in the '60's to '80's, has morphed into "whatever tastes good". It is all part of the growing trend to shirk personal responsibility.

Malnutrition, oddly enough. America produces scads of food, but much of it is lacking in terms of nutritional content - other than simple calories.
