Assuming you are using Windows. To speed up a computer, first, I would install and run some spy-ware remover software, such as Spybot or Ad Aware, next I would uninstall as many of the unused icons in your notification area, the right side of the task bar near the clock. Next I would check in the start-up folder in the start menu, and remove any programs that you don't use. Next I would use disk clean up. (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup) Next I would defrag your hard drive.(Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter)
A fresh install of Windows will also improve performance, but that comes at a cost of the hassle of transferring settings, files and software.
The above are the free options. If all that does not work, you might try something like Registry Mechanic, which will clean the registry and remove unused keys, making your system run faster.
And finally adding RAM to a slow computer can usually help performance.

#1 Shut down any extra gadgets that just take up computer power (look next to your clock) also turn off special effects like mouse shadows and menu annimation etc.
#2 Defrag on a regular basis
#3 add more RAM!! --- this is the least expensive and most cost effective upgrade for any computer
Without knowing more about your situation... that's all I can think of.

You could try stopping some of the programs from loading with windows. Those that do load with windows run in the background and use up allot of ram. So try this: Click Start and then Run. In the Run box type "msconfig" without the quotes. In the utility that open, click the "Start Up" tab. Now remove the check from those programs that you don't want to load with windows. Leave your anti virus and your firewall running, but most of the rest need not load. Use some judgment, but, you can always go back and turn on anything that was turned off in error.

there are a few things you can do:
1. download Advanced Windowscare Personal edition and run it at least once a week and dont forget to update it too by going to status.
2. by using Windowscare go to tools and startup manager, deselect the ones that you don't necessarily need such as messenger, quicktime, etc.
3. Go to control panel and click on system, go to advanced. Under performance go to settings and select adjust for best performance.
4. Add more RAM if possible, go to www.crucial.com to find out what kind of RAM you need and even order it there if possible, they have pretty good prices.
for more info go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/performance.mspx
email me back for more information on some other sites that may help.

install/upgrade more RAM, put in a proccessor with a higher clock speed, or get a hard drive with a higher RPM. Otherwise, clean out all of your junk on your computer, and a fresh install of windows is always nice (and it won't touch your files)
