Then dont breast feed. That nicotine is staying in your bloodstream and in your milk, so dont breastfeed if you cant quit. Seriously, formula will be just fine. It is just selfish to keep smoking and breast feed.

Mystic is right on. It's best to quit, but the next best choice is breastfeeding while smoking. Your milk will help your baby overcome the health setbacks involved with living with a smoker. The risks of formula feeding are greater than the risks of smoke exposure. Mystic suggested some good websites, and if you want to read a book about breastfeeding, I suggest these:
The Ultimate Book Of Breastfeeding Answers by Jack Newman
The Breastfeeding Book by Martha Sears
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding published by La Leche League International
Good luck to you! Kudos for breastfeeding!

No matter whether you breastfeed or not.... just by smoking period, you are harming your baby. Because if you continue smoking, you are going to end up with lung cancer and die and leave this child without a mother. That is harming this child!! STOP SMOKING if you are so worried about harming your baby!!

You need to figure out your priorities!
Every single time you smoke around your baby, you are causing him/her harm. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Doesn't matter if you're breastfeeding or not.
You are either going to have to stop, or live with the fact that you're hurting your baby so you can enjoy your addiction. Other addicts may think this is harsh, but oh well, its the truth.

Bottle-fed infants have a much higher incidence of respiratory illnesses than breastfed infants. A bottle-fed baby whose mother or other household members smoke would therefore be at even higher risk of these problems. Dr. Jack Newman states "The risks of not breastfeeding are greater to the baby than the risks of breastfeeding and smoking. The decision is up to the mother and I would encourage her to breastfeed."

Unless you are smoking more than 1.5-2 packs a day it is SAFER to smoke and breastfeed than it is to smoke and bottle feed.
Breastfeeding, though it will pass some nicoteine and toxins to the baby is highly protective against the damage caused by mom smoking, both before and after birth. Formula feeding of course has a wide variety of other risks both in the short and long terms that should be taken into account.
Breastfeeding and Cigarette Smoking
First of all, a mom who can't stop smoking should breastfeed. Breastfeeding provides many immunities that help your baby fight illness and can even help counteract some of the effects of cigarette smoke on your baby: for example, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the negative effects of cigarette smoke on a baby's lungs. It's definitely better if breastfeeding moms not smoke, but if you can't stop or cut down, then it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed.
The more cigarettes that you smoke, the greater the health risks for you and your baby. If you can't stop smoking, or don't want to stop smoking, it's safer for your baby if you cut down on the number of cigarettes that you smoke.

I am a first time mom and I breastfeed. I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant. My daughter is now 51/2 months old. I didn't start back up. I don't plan on it. I admit sometimes I want one but then I think of my daughter.

You should really consider not smoking whether or not you breast feed your baby.
You share the same air, and that infant is getting second-hand smoke every time you exhale.
You CAN stop. See if you can get a nicotine patch or gum, which will at least keep the smoke out of the air. There are lots of resources out there for smoking moms - you can use them. There's no need to go it alone.
And the previous poster was right - breast milk is better for your baby than formula regardless of your smoking. Most of the damage is from inhalation.

It is best to breastfeed if you are going to smoke. Just as your Dr. not the people here. Breast milk is still better with a bit of nicotine in it then formula. I smoked while nursing my daughter. She was fine. Just do not smoke around the baby. I smoked outside away from the house usually right after nursing. She was an exceptionally healthy baby and 9 years later is in all the advanced classes at school!
