Yes, if you want to work as an actor. How one gets an agent varies.

The method by which an actor gets a Talent Agent is NOT the same in every city in the USA.

You must find out the procedure in the city where you live, for getting an agent. Start by asking your acting teacher and your actor friends.

As for your other questions, ask your acting teacher or actor friends. Don't look online.

Okay lets just say Cameron Diaz has an agent. yes , You need an agent for big time jobs, or sometimes you need them for a small job, too. You need them to handle the icky stuff you don't want to handle. They call you on auditions. and take 13% or watever of what you make. You should get one when you want to pursue acting. Agents don't cost anything!Or at least the good ones don't. you have to search around on the internet and phonebooks and research to find and call them. My agent Bonnie Black didn't make me pay anything and calls me on commercial auditions and whatnot. Well, Good Luck findind one.

Are you speaking of theatre or film/TV/commercial? You don't necessarily need one for either, but it's best to have one for the latter (and my answers are specific to that):

1. Yes, I have one
2. I was recommended by a casting agent who saw me perform; however, generally you submit your headshot and resume (and reel, if you have one) to an agent and ask for representation.
3. You should wait until you have experience; they'll want to be able to make money from your skills.
4. They help to coordinate your career (and receives commissions for doing so). They are the conduit for auditions. Casting agents go through talent agents before they issue any "open" calls.
5. Here's a general "how to" website:
