Or instead, find a way to back out?

Deedee, this isn't about me, instead it's a way to find out how people tick. Do they stand firm when pushed in a corner, or find an exit fast?

Jujuma,
I actually do think people will go to their death for the cause. I have read much about the resistance movement in WW2, many died while standing firm for what they believe. I think the human spirit is a wonderful thing. On the night of the broken glass, I like to think I would have stood firm for what I believe in, that all men are equal, in my eyes they are, at least they should have that right!
Thank you for your answer, I found your opinion interesting...

What is life without conviction of belief and honor for a just cause?
Is passion somehow to be voided by passe' objectivity and the belief that something is *hard?* To run, to fight another day as a primary course is to run, pure and simple.
This good knight sticks to his causes that are true and good because it is just to be true and good, and for no other reason than that.
That is the definition of bravery, that in spite of fear and fear of personal harm or personal injury, you do what is right for a just cause.
In the end, we all die. How we live defines us and leaves our legacy, just as a pebble thrown into a still pond creates a wake. So do we, for good or ill.

You need to understand: while there is life, there is hope.

I have experienced enough to know that the guys in white hats don't always win. Not every battle, and not even the war as a whole sometimes. But the fight cannot end if fighters are still alive and fighting.

Going out with your guns blazing - metaphorically or otherwise - is easy. TOO easy.

Instead, I will demean myself. I will pretend to lose so I can keep up the fight. I will seem to betray all that I hold dear in order to truly bring it to fruition. This is a long, agonizing sacrifice that I am willing to make... and have, on occasion, already made.

If I believe in the justice of my cause, I WILL win. I will survive by any means. Even if it means I have to lose to do so.

Peace.

I'm afraid to say that the vast majority of people capitulate when it really comes down to it. That's why the Nazis were so successful.
Personally, there have been times when I've taken a stand and times when I've run away. It depends upon what there is at stake. People who take a stand every single time are misguided (Though sometimes brave). They don't last long. I hope I would have taken a stand in the 1930s and 40s.

Absolutely. Do it all the time. See no other option. Much rather go down fighting and still have my integrity. I've lost a great deal, it has to be said, with this attitude, because it is not one that is accepted by many people - many people would rather turn blind eyes, justify U-turns and all that, but I cannot. Such is my karma this lifetime.... as you are interested in what makes people tick.. I tell you. And I do this for me and for those around me, if I see injustice. Champion of the bloody oppressed, I am.

One would explore all available options, and then take the option which makes the most sense. One would not fight on to the end, if in doing so you will lose. It is better to find a way to stay alive, than to fight to the death.

If you stay alive, then you don't lose. This is ultimately preferable in warfare than certain defeat. Your enemy can only win if you are defeated.

Certainly, I can imagine strategic situations where a back out is viable and sensible. The justice of the cause would not really be a major factor in the decision.

All of this is about ego. Typical win or lose situation. Why do you have to be right? Being happy is much better. It doesn't really matter what the others think, you know what you know. The need to prove your case is all about ego and in the end you might win but lose a lot of other things on the way, like friendships etc. So be happy! Don't fight!

I fight on now. Growing up I spent too much time doing what everyone else did. I don't do that anymore...
I learned that what is right is worth fighting for. And yes some of my friends have died doing this very thing, but it is still worth the cost. I sometimes wish it had been me instead of them so they could've had a full life like I have.

Acknowldging that we can all make mistakes...... If in full possession of all the facts...I was sure that i was right and my cause was just, I would fight to the end. If for one moment I felt my back was against the wall....then I would have to acknowledge that I might be wrong........and re-consider. I might have to back out if I felt it was the prudent thing to do.
Best wishes, Mike.
