processor - amd sucks these days, get an intel conroe (e6xxx series) like the e6600, their whole lineup just had a big price drop - if you want to overclock at all -> an e4300 is a killer deal but you should probably buy a better heatsink like the sythe ninja to go with it. However if your willing to wait for the end of july, the intel q6600 (a quad core - essentially 2 e6600s) will be down under 300 which is just crazy.
video card - if you want it to be a little future proof (windows vista maybe?) an evga 8800 gts 640mb seems to be the best deal these days, was only like $360 canadian at ncix.com, youl have to buy a tv tuner seperate though which will be like $100
if you don't play alot of games a cheaper alternative is the Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB AGP TV Out Video Card, its slower, but still pretty fast
memory - get 2gb (2x1gb kit) of ddr2-6400 ive seen it on sale for $100 lots of times, any more (like 4gb) is pretty much a waste of time
motherboard - the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 is pretty good for the price, if you want to spend more go for one of the Asus Deluxe boards
** if your getting the sapphire card though youl have to get an agp board (instead of pci-express) like the ASRock 4COREDUAL-VSTA
hard drive - go with seagate
case - you get alot for your money with an antec p182, but its a bit of a pain to work with, otherwise get a lian li or silverstone if you want to spend more, then get a power supply ~500-600w like the silverstone zeus
if you build a computer like above it should come out to around $2,000. If you spend any more, you do get a bit of a better computer - of course whether that extra little bit of performance is worth it is up to you (like paying $1200 for a quad core). I find when you're building a computer you get the best performance for your dollar in the 1-2k range (without a monitor)

If you don't want western digital, i'd try seagate personally for a hard drive.
For a video card i'd go with ATI, i've found them to be the best. If you want versitality, get an all-in-wonder card.
For a proccessor/motherboard, go AMD for speed, remember, intel claims to have a slightly higher clock speed than they actually do, where AMD has a slightly higher clock speed then they claim. Dual cores are nice.
Also, if you wait about a month in a half more AMD will be releasing the worlds first true, independently working quad core computer processor. That would be something to have in a system. Hope that helps.

Airlaunc... Seems to have an AMD bias. Currently Intels C2Ds are the fastest line of processors around. You'll want to get 2 GeForce 8800Ultras in SLI if you are doing games (which guessing by the form of your post, you're looking for) or 2 Quadro FX5500 in SLI if you're doing 3D rendering. You'll want a C2X X6800, and definatly DDR1250 RAM, 4 gigs of it. It'll cost you a small fortune, but it's some good stuff.
