I believe you need a passport only if you are flying in. You will need your passport next year even if you are driving. I would check with immigration department before I travel

Yes you do, the rules changed earlier this year. You must have a passport when you exit and enter the US

Well, You don't need a passport to enter Mexico, but you will need one if you plan on coming back. That is if you weren't born in the U.S.
If you were born in the US, you just need to show your social security card.
