To breed bettas it is best to have at least a 10 gal tank with plenty of cover and more than one female so the male does not beat the one to death. When the female is full of eggs (distended belly with an ovadepositor protruding) she will be ready to mate. After they are done mating he will chase her away from the nest. The male betta is naturally aggressive for a fish its size. No breeding will take that aggression out. Good Luck!
P.S. - A 1 gal tank is not large enough for 2 bettas!

I'm not clear- are you wnting to breed them? You cannot keep male and female bettas in the same tank other than for spawning or he will usually kill her. If you want to breed them, you put them next to each other in seperate containers ( he should be in about a 2-5 gallon tank, hers can be smaller), feed them a good diet of live and frozen foods. When he is ready he will build a buble nest and she will become gravid ( full of eggs). you then place her in with him and he will squeeze her to remove the eggs, then he will place them in the nest. You must then remove her or he may kill her. He will take care of the nest and the babies. You would probably need more detailed instructions to be successful at this it is not as easy as it sounds. Good Luck.

I used to breed betta when I was in middle school. You'll need a 10 gallon heated aquarium with a glass bottom so you don't lose the eggs. You also don't want a filter-It may suck up the eggs. An airstone will work for circulating the water. You may add a floating plant to help hold the bubble nest. Add the female and the male at the same time. Watch them carefully for about 20 minutes. If no "action" happens, keep monitoring them off and on for as long as you can. If you have to leave, remove the male.

You need a much bigger tank for one. 1 gallon is barely small enough for one Betta. You shouldn't have a male and a female in that tank at all. Not even for breeding. In order to breed them you should have at least a 10 gallon tank. Go to this website and read up on this species before you decide to breed them.

You should not have a male and female betta together unless you are spawning.
You need to seperate them or you could end up with two dead betta's. Even in a nice planted 10gallon aquarium you would have a problem.
buy another tank and enjoy your two fish seprately ;)

you can buy tank dividers, know this a male wont kill the female generally in mating season and it may kill the female after mating too so be carefull.

They won't kill each other because males only fight males, however, the tank will be too small for breeding. One tip would be to have live plants (i like duckweed) for them to eat and hide in and hide the eggs in should they have any.
