interested in renting an apartment. owner does not live nearby and want deposit held in Yahoo realestate account. would need to send moneygram for 3 months rent accross the USA. Can't see the apt. until money is held in escrow. Has anyone ever done this? Is it safe? Don't want to lose 3 months rent.

I would have to say, this sounds exactly like a scam. I have worked in property management for 15 years and we had done nothing of this sort of deal. And if the rental agent pressures you, you may ask for management's number, if he/she is a owner of the property have them provide documents to you. More than likely they will decline.
I would have to say, firstly it's not safe, secondly, it's more than likely not even legal.

I would say no, it is not safe to send the money, espically as a moneygram because there is nothing to keep him from cashing it and running off with your money.
This honestly does not sound legitimate. Most places do not ask for 3 months rent anymore, usually just a security deposit. And I have never heard of not being able to see an apartment until you have paid. The only way you should not beable to see an apartment is if it is being worked on (carpets and painting and such) or if it is still occupied.

HELL NO! why pay for somethign ur not sure if u want ? u need pictures, measuresments, floorplans, square footage and a contract??? all BEFORE paying this security deposit. security deposit secures the apartment for you, if u end up not liking it then ur screwed and they have a right to keep it. do not pay until u are 100% satisfied and def want it. theres a reason they wont show apt or pics until money, bc its a DUMP!
p.s. money orders are hard to track so if you do pay with money orders to anyone, ever make photocopies of it front and back before sending it incase it gets lost u can easily track it.

You need to be allowed to see the apartment BEFORE making deposit any other transaction would be questionable at best

you should never send people money that you do not know. especially if you have not even seen the apartment yet. im sure he has somebody close to the apartment that could show it to you first. if he says he doesnt, then keep your money. dont rist losing it.
