It depends on your certification. There IS an open water certification. Unless you're qualified, I'd advise against it.

Go to a PADI center and do your open water certification. This will allow you to dive to 60'. Then when you do your advanced class this will teach you to dive to 100' or more. I did all my PADI classes for recreational diving. It is much safer to do it with an instructor and you need to get certified to buy any diving equipment, borrow it or even get air fills from any reputable store. Normally, for your first class you are expected to buy a mask, fins, snorkel and gloves and booties if you are diving in cooler water. Don't buy these yet though - wait until your instructor is able to advise you. You can borrow other equipment such as regulator, computer, tanks, wetsuit/drysuit etc from the PADI center. Your instructor will be able to recommend brands as they know the local conditions and your personal needs far better than me. Good luck, and have fun with your diving!

Uh, yes. And it's not dangerous like the answerer above me implied. I've been diving in the ocean on coral reefs off florida since I was 12 years old.
