Yep. Republic = representation. The US is also a republic, just a democratic one. The People's Republic just doesn't specify which people are being represented (Chinese, I'm sure, but which ones and how many, I don't know).

The People's Republic of China is a triple misnomer.
1. The government does not represent the people.
2. The government is not a republic (body elected by the people to represent their local/provincial interests) in the sense that we understand it.
3. The claim to authority over China is de facto disputed by the existence of the government of the Republic of China (currently in exile on the island of Taiwan).

Definitely.
A definition is required here.
A republic is a nation run by a set of laws.
Any nation that operates that way is a republic.
The contents of those laws are the critical issue.
China's laws were formed by Communist Dictators who want tyrannical power over the people. That is changing but has a LONG way to go.
Our Founding Fathers here in the U.S.A. amazed the entire world by resisting that oh-so-human urge to grant themselves such power.
They were so rare an example to everyone everywhere. Too bad others don't follow suit.
All the Americas, North and South, could have done the same thing and if they had, they would be prosperous also. If they had, the problems of illegal immigration we see today would not exist.

REPUBLIC = RES PUBLICA (The public thing)
So it only means the public sphere... that can be pretty much any somehow shared political sphere ! or even mediatic one if widely opened !

No, it's not.
You can't go by the names of communist countries.. they tend to include a lot of "democratic" and "republic" when their governmental system is purely dictatorship.
