Actually i might agree with you there. but thats not enough, once the punishment is given in such a way that they've learnt their lesson they then need to be re-habilitated. I reckon first year in prison = sh hole, next year a little better and so on while they are given skills and help to be normal people again. any set backs and they go straight to the begginning again. also i don't think we should have fixed terms but however long it takes until we know they wont do it again.

I've no desire to make things easy for criminals, but those of us who live in any sort of comfort now, would find prison an absolute shithole. Sharing a small room with another criminal, toilet in the corner, locked up for at least half the day - no thanks!
Loss of liberty is the punishment; prison should be basic, clean, warm and enough to sustain life.
Making it as you said would offer no deterrent. What criminal commits a crime assuming he'll get caught? Most assume they won't get caught, so it doesn't matter what the punishment is - it won't deter.

The popular media image,is that of great comfort and palystations.
I can assure you, prison is a shithole, the food is inedible and it is common place for rations to be below the minimum calorific value.
It is corrupt, the staff are corrupt, prison is overflowing with heroin brought in by staff.
Prison is extremely violent, whether you look for trouble or not.
there are no playstations etc as you may read about in the newspapers,They dont last a week until they are smashed to peices. All facilities in prisons are bought from the huge profits made from selling phone time to prisoners at extortionate rates.Toilet roll is rationed, often there is none.
prisoners do work in prison, often 60-70 hours per week, for which they get paid £14pw,this is then spent on phone time and toothpaste.
prison staff are rude and difficult to visitors so as to discourage visits that are a drain on private prison profits.
Agonising toothache is met with painkillers every day for up to 6months until the dirty backstreet dentist arrives, the only treatment is extraction.
i could go on,
please dont be fooled, prison is no a holiday camp.

Having spoken to someone who has spent time in prison I don't think it is a very easy ride anyway for anyone who has any self respect.
However their are some people who are so inadequate that prison is a shelter were they are fed and clothed and without responsibility.
A recent survey has shown that a large proportion of people in prison either should not be their because of mental health problems or would not be there if they could read and write.
I don't have any answer but it makes me think

I think that prisons should have levels. The first level should be a sh** hole, as you say. Prisoners should be able to work for basic needs, however. Screw up and you go back to level one. Hopefully this would resocialize them so that when they get out they know that work gets you what you want, not scamming the system as they learn now.

No.They should certainly be organised on a far different basis than at present. It is my opinion that age segregation should be mandatory.25yr.olds and under should be subjected to an old style military discipline.Out of bed at 5am.cold shower;2hrs.P.T.then breakfast.then an hour cleaning accommodation.an hour doing their washing/mending.1/2hr.free time locked up.4hrs.education.lunch hr.organised sport for 2hrs.an hour locked up.high tea.2hrs association.lock up.lights out at 21.30.They would not wish to re offend!!

It shouldn't have to cost £30,000 per person per year. That's well above the average wage in Britain. Ridiculous. They should at least earn their keep and do something productive.

I don't think prisoners should be allowed to socialise. and the most basic of facilities. especially lifers, why in goodness should they be given the right to warmth and comfort, they should be given cold showers, no choice of food etc etc.
