I know the basics like blanket and stuff, but anything else?

I made washcloths and soap for friends/family last year. You can throw in some candles some other bath salts etc.. This is something that can be done for anyone. I like to knit them but I tried a popcorn stitch (crochet) and I like the way it looks and feels.

One year, I found a ton of silk shirts at a thrift store and that was the year that the kids and hubby got crazy quilt stockings. I have made them into memory stockings by adding to them every year. There are lots of cross stitch and needlepoint stocking patterns. The cat got a knitted stocking one year. Joann's had some cute ideas with a curly footed one. I would check out the library and online for some ideas. You can customize them for decor or personality.

Doilies are nice for those who like a classic/ oldfashioned decor. I have a friend who lives in a 100 year old house. I am going to do a nice runner or doily for her. I have been looking for turn of the century ones at antiquepatterns.org. I might just do one from the 30-50's. Maybe a nice pineapple, my favorite!

I am considering doing a tablecloth using a filet insert pattern for a friend's 50th anniversary but it could be a nice christmas gift. I was thinking about getting a ready made table cloth and then cutting it into the appropriate strips, hem the strips and attach the fillet once it is competed. This is a big project but if you had a wedding, anniversary of if you wanted a gift for a special couple at christmas, I think that this would be wonderful.

Lace on a sale item like pillowcases, sheets. Lace can be worked up pretty quickly and it really makes a classic gift.

I am refinishing some furniture so I am making runners for the buffet and I need to make some nice placemats for everyday use and lacy ones to showcase my handywork both with the furniture and placemats! A purchased cloth placemat with some crocheted or even knitted lace would be nice for someone.

How about a lacy sofa pillow? If you don't sew, then you can find a sale pillow in a tasteful color and when crochet a doily to fit or not (it could be smaller than the pillow - think of the pillow as matting for the masterpiece). Block, press and stitch it on.

I usually crochet a pair of slippers for each one of my family members and that is always appreciated. I can see about finding the pattern that I use if anyone is interested. They work up very easily and the guys in my life love this gift. They don't usually care about my crocheting but they love this. This is not crocheted but it has become a tradition in our house. I always sew the children PJs for christmas. I usually make hubby a pair of flannel lounge pants.

My family loved science fiction/fantasy/ anime. I might consider doing a wizard or mythological cross stitch if I weren't so hopeless when it comes to cross stitches. I lose track! It can be framed or made into a pillow.

I am almost 40 so my grannies would be as old as the hill if they were still alive. However, if you have a granny who likes shawls, how about one. The cold hits hard as you get older and circulation decreases. Lapafgan might be a good idea for granny. They are smaller and quicker to work. I have made lap quilts or afgans for my kids so they didn't have to share with their siblings. That is a nice idea for younger cousins.

What about a ipod or cellphone purse/cover? I have seen some patterns for these. I think that they were on Joann.com or Michaels.com .

Are knit ties back yet? It has been 20 years! Well, if not...how about starting a new trend.

I usually look around at what is available in the stores and then set about making it myself. Maybe there is something they were eyeing and you can make it better, bigger and in their favorite color!

Hope this helps,

Dawn

I personally would just put on the invitation: 'No presents please, just your your presence would be appreciated'. Your guests will surmise you may be on gift overload form past occasions, and this will help to take the pressure off for them to find the perfect gift. A few guests may call and inquire, and if they do you politely suggest a gift card, savings bond, or a monetary donation for the child's bank account. This may solve your gift dilemma, but keep in mind your guests may come empty handed, so don't be shocked. At one year old your son would really benefit from bonding with family and friends rather than a bunch of toys that will break, and from clothes he will outgrow. I hope that doesn't sound too harsh, it is coming from past experience. Enjoy your day, memories are the most important part of a birthday:)

You could make a spa set for the ladies and a sport/tv watching set for the guys.

Spa set - crochet some washcloths, make some soaps and bath salts, maybe even some potpourri. Package them all in a tin or basket. (see my site for a cute how to on gift tins made out of paint cans on http://www.craftincorner.com/project_of_the_month__mother.htm)

Sport/TV set - make a cozy throw blanket, add some hot cocoa packs, mug, popcorn and package all in a tin or basket as well.

Great gifts that will keep going for many days after Christmas.

Happy Crafting!

1. Coasters made in the shape of Snowflakes - you can knit or crochet or cross stitch.
2. Christmas ornaments
3. Knitted socks for men - camoflauge color/pattern for hunters.

I am thinking about the same things for Christmas.

One year I put together little emergency sewing kits and gave them out. Everybody loved them. I used Altoids tins. Covered the top with fabric and cross stitiched a little oval design (with their name), Then I padded and glued the design over an oval cardboard cutout. Added some lace underneath the oval and glued the whole piece to the top of the tin. Then I filled the tin with miscellaneous needles, pins, saftely pins, buttons, bobbins of thread, etc. They we very fun to put together!

Enjoy!

My best friend made me a scarf last year that she knew would match my coat. She made it extra long too because she knows I like them like that. A tea cozy for grandma maybe?

Other yarn work ideas:
- pot holders
- golf club covers (for dad!)
- scarves & gloves
- socks

If you cross stitch you could do a relative-specific piece, like a mom or grandma or best friend piece. They have tons to choose from at the craft stores or you could design your own.

Good luck and have fun!

If anyone goes to Church maybe a Bible Cover made out of crochet thread, doll clothes for any small girls or games. If anyone collects certain items for their home like chicken and stuff like that maybe make chicken potholders, magnets and towel toppers, tissue covers, maybe doilies with family menbers last name on it. If making them they can be used to lay out or to frame and hang on the wall.

Hand warmers were a hot pattern this last holiday and are a quick knit. Great for those in highly A/C offices. Knitted, stuffed animals are fun and quick projects as well. Handknit socks are also greatly appreciated! Have fun crafting!

If you're into photography, take pictures and frame them. You can even buy unfinished frames to decorate.
Make your own cards and gift tags.
