Many applications can save as PDF. The advantage is that the PDF preserves all the formatting and (usually) fonting in the original document, while allowing anyone with Acrobat reader to view the document exactly as intended - the recipient does not have to have the original program (like Word) on their computer. In addition, PDF format compresses the doc to a smaller size.

A PDF file requires the receiver to have a program by the name of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Also it will require you to also have a copy of that program to create the file in the first place. so if it's not manditory that you use PDF (Portable Document File) in the first place don't use it. Sending files in MS Word adds bytes to the file and increases it's file size. Most people will on the receiving end will not even open (PDF Files) or (MS Word Files), they perfer that you use either Outlook Express or just Notepad.
Hope this helps!

The main difference is a PDF file can be utilized by both PC's and MAC's without additional software other than Adobe Reader.

MAC's need an adapter program to convert "Word" files to a format they can deal with.

PDF stands for "portable document format".

Hope I helped.
