Try to identify which process is hogging the CPU with task manager. CTRL+ALT+DEL-->click process tab-->identify hog-->click on it-->click end task

If the process comes back, then it may be some sort of malware or virus.

If the process was vital for functioning of windows then you may have other problems.

These are some free suggested software titles for protection, you should have some sort of protection in these categories.

If you don't have any antivirus then something is better than nothing, free, but I would strongly suggest that you purchase Kaspersky Antivirus solution. You can even use the fully functional 30 day trial and uninstall it after you fix your problem.

Reinstall xp or the preferred operating system. You probably have virus's or spyware that causes memory leaks and slows down the computer.

The programs you use could use a lot of your ram, and you have an excessive quantity of start up programs. Or maybe your computer doesnt have 1.5gb.
