There was point this afternoon where my mail on the Yahoo webpage was changing from bold, which meant that my laptop was picking up the mail. Can Yahoo trace the IP where the mail is being picked up and help the police locate it?

Yes, but they won't give you this information easily.
Your best bet is to change your Yahoo Mail password so they can't read it anymore.

Report your stolen laptop to the cops. Then also inform them that the thief is accessing your Yahoo! account. Although Yahoo will not give you the info direclty, they will be under obligation to do so when the cops ask them in process of a robbery investigation.
If the cops are ready to help, I am sure you can locate your laptop.

Yes this makes your laptop traceable. Whether the police will be bothered is another matter. Ultimately you need to change your Yahoo password to make your account safe to use

send yourself a nasty virus that erases everything laptop wont be much good to thief then sorry dont know how to do it you will have to ask on here how , it would be good if you could though
