In XP click on Start>Connect To>click on "Show all Connections"
Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and choose Properties - a Local Area Connection Properties box should open. Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and put a dot in obtain an IP address automatically, ALSO put a dot in Obtain DNS server address automatically (UNLESS your ISP has told you to use a specific DNS server address.
Then click the Ok's until you get back to the desktop

give this a go...

go to the start menu, select run... and type in cmd and press return. (on Vista, search for the command prompt shortcut on your start menu)

you should get a black box on your screen with a prompt similar to this >_

type in at this prompt (without quotes) "ipconfig /release" and press return

then type in "ipconfig /renew all" and press return

give that a go, hope that sorts it for you.

I'd suggest going into Start > Network Connections > and then right clicking on your connection and choosing "Renew."
