Hundred's of years ago, women were repressed....they werent allowed to vote...they were not allowed to participate in the work force, unless it had to do with "women's work" A woman's place, was to be seen and not heard. She was a subservient creature and the husband had the power. Divorce wasnt heard of then because women just shut their mouths if they were unhappy because they "knew their place".

Women got sick of being treated as second rate citizens so they formed a women's movement and thats when women began to be liberated. The Womens Lib movement fought for equal rights. Women were beginning to feel better about themselves....they started to feel like they were a man's equal. They started to stand up for themselves and would not accept "bad" treatment from their husband's any more.

That is the reason why divorce is so high because women have been educated and realise they deserve better treatment. I do think people dont try as hard as they should to keep the marriage alive and divorce sometimes is the easiest option. We also live in a very hi tech society where we all have computers at our fingertips. Pornography is easily accessible and sex is something we all seem to talk about openly these days. Sex can be gotten easily by the press of your typewriter keys. Our lifestyle too is faster, you need a husband and wife both working to make ends meet half the time. Buying a home these days is getting harder and harder to afford and I think all these social and financial pressures can sometimes get on top of you. People drift apart for all sorts of reasons....could be pressure or temptation....both are reasons why people get divorced. I guess we all have a higher opinion of ourselves than we did hundreds of years ago too. Peoples Rights are are Legislated. We all know that we have a right to be treated fairly...so we stand up for our rights in a relationship as well....we wont accept unfair treatment for too long......we want better for ourselves...so, if after trying to work on our problems and nothing changes, then we divorce. I really dont think people, as a rule, use divorce as a first means to a solution. I think divorce is the last resort.

People believe that love is something you feel intense about all the time. When that feeling fades, they think they don't love that person any more. They go and find someone new that they have those feelings with. What they end up finding out is that the feeling will fade with the new person as well. That is sexual tension not love. Real love is staying with the person, it is 20 years down the road knowing that person inside and out. When you see two 60 year olds walking down the street and the woman pauses. When you see the man pause and hold on to her elbow, and lead her to a bench. That is real love. Someone who when you are old and gray, breathing your last breath, will reach over and kiss your lips. Who will cry and say I will see you soon. That is built from staying together through the good and bad. Somewhere people forgot that love is not sex. Passion always fades, and grows. Stay through the fading, and you will find acceptance, but most of all love.

I think because back in the day, woman were housewives and the husbands worked out in the world, and eventually would meet a woman and have an affair.

Men back in the day would have mistresses like it was the normal thing to do, and when the wife would find out, they would stay in the relationship and deal with it. Plus where would that woman go, being a housewife for so many years with no work experience? And back then most jobs were geared towards men.

Now woman are at the point where they wont stand for it. Woman realize that they don't have to stay in an unhealthy relationship.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing men, but that is how it was back in the day.

Divorce is more common today because people are less dependent on each other and have learned to become more independent.
Fear is the biggest deterrent to getting anything done and now a days people have realized that they aren't stuck with anyone any more. People stay together out of the mutual decision to stay together.

In years past, divorce wasn't as common because women didn't have a means to support themselves. Marriage was more about having your physical needs met; food, shelter, money.

Now that women don't "need" a man to take care of them, marriage is about having your emotional needs met. If your needs aren't being met by your husband, you look for someone else who will meet them. Everyone wants to be happy.

because people have no idea what commitment means....I have been married for 23 years and there are times when I think my husband is the biggest dork...but...we work through the hard times, and value our commitment and voila, 23 years later and I think he is the most sexy desirable man in the world!
Hard work and commitment has paid off for us...We also raised 3 children!
