I have lived with my partner for 7 years. We are very happy, share a life, property and a dog!. During this time, I have watched three of my friends do through very messy divorces. Marriage is not for me and my partner - we want to spend the rest of our lives together but do not see the need to justify our love by having a ceremony - we are not religious. There is something I find frightening about saying this is it for the rest of my life - the itention is there but all you can do is hope you continue to want the same things in life - that is what makes it workl. There is no pressure - we are together because we love each other - if we have a bad patch like most people do - I don't think "my marriage is in trouble" I just think oh well, it will be all back to normal in a couple of weeks - no pressure. Obviously, you need to make sure you are protected financially if you own property together but you need to do that even if you are married. I chose to have the money that a wedding would cost on a beautiful ring - he wasn't going to get away with that one!

p.s - in the UK there are no tax advantages to getting married - they were removed years ago. I have always though those who get married for tax breaks are most certainly getting married for the wrong reason - particualarly as it only used to be around £1,750 per annum!

Oh dear. All such negative answers. I think it`s great. It`s the best thing I ever did, it beats being on your own, or just shacked up together with no security. I also think you should be married if you`re in a relationship and have got kids.

dont look as tax incentive, marriage may only be a piece of paper but it is still important part of living together, trust, faith, love, care ,i know some people would walk away from this i call collective responsibility, looking after your loved ones your children, parents, and family trust.understanding ,honesty,good/bad times,a true identity of family.

As long as you don't think marriage will improve the relationship its not that bad.
It people who think of marriage as a finish line who are the ones who get divorced.

Not worth it. I don't think men and women were ever meant to live together under any circumstances...
