Fire - I pick it because it is the element that is most responsible for the transfer of energy, which is what makes the universe "tick". In abundance, it is easily the dominant force, determing the state of water (ice, liquid, or gas - of which only the liquid form even threatens the power of fire), turning earth into charcoal or melting it into glass, and altering the force and direction of wind (and there would be no wind if there were no heat).
Naturally, the sun is a manifestation of fire, and the sun defines life on Earth. No element can match it's influence from that standpoint.
But, of course, I'd use my power for good instead of evil!

If I could control the four elements earth, wind, water and fire then I must be in all those elements because by then I would surely know how to be a good controller of those elements..

Water is life.
In Greek mythology, the gods faced the same choice after they defeated the titans. The older (and wiser) Poseidon scorned his brother Zeus (who got to choose first) for picking the air.
For the oceans are teeming life as no place else... from the deepest depths to its very surface. It is water that makes the crops grow from the barren earth. It is wells and rivers that determine the placement of cities. And where there are no roads is the the water that is the road.
And though many know the ocean as a friend and a provider, it is also full of mysteries. How many pirate ships laden with treasure lie waiting in the deeps? What other unknown creatures dwell there, waiting like the coelacanth to be revealed and remind man of how little he truly knows? A life in the midst of this would be pregnant with discovery and excitement!
Sure, a stone may deflect the path of a river, but the river eventually cuts through it. Water is flexible. It can adjust to circumstances in order to overcome them. And unlike the lofty air it has substance. Presence. Water can be trusted to flow in certain ways, but the fickle wind blows one way an then the other from hour to hour.
Water is life.

I always felt some desire to be the wind after really listening to the song "Available Light" from Rush - excerpt-
"The restless wind
Has seen all things
In every kind of light
Rising with the full moon
To go howling through the night
The sleepless wind
Has heard all things
Between the sea and sky
In the canyons of the city
You can hear the buildings cry
Oh the wind can carry
All the voices of the sea
Oh the wind can carry
All the echoes home to me
Run with wind and weather
To the music of the sea
All four winds together
Can't bring the world to me
Chase the wind around the world
I want to look at life
In the available light"

if you mean the planet earth then that would give me power and control over all four, so I choose earth.
If you are talking soil or dirt the I think Water would be a good choice. That would give me control over mankind who is like 97% water.
I am still thinking about wind.

According to this book I read, my element is Earth.
I'm glad of this.
Earth is the most powerful of the elements, and it is the most beautiful.
And with the power to lift ocean floors, control burning trees, and the direction of the wind, I can become a master of controlling all elements without a direct ora to the element.

I would control Air. With air in control, you can agitate or eliminate Fire. You can evaporate and eliminate Water. With heavy winds, Air can erode and relocate (albeit slowly, but still) Earth.
