Ph.D. theses, or dissertations, have to follow a prescribed format which would bore most casual readers to death. When was the last time you read a non-fiction, best-selling book with a 50-page literature review in it? So the answer is no, you can't just write any kind of a book and "use it" as a thesis.

"Don't Think of an Elephant" by George Lakoff.
Not his PhD, but close enough (written by a group though), made it to the NY best seller list in 2004 (presidential year).
Short version of it - a little caricatural, but that's besides your question.
I would look into history, especially about the 2nd world war or camps in Japan or something, I vaguely recall something like that.
