Because. It is the right thing to do.
Afterwards, we can apologize to the dodo bird for making it extinct, the Native Americans for taking their land. The buffalo for turning their praries into highways. While we're at it we might as well apologize for that asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs... I mean, we didn't cause the asteroid to hit Earth, but ya kno, let's throw that in there.
Oh, and let's apologize to the moon for all the times our Earth blocks the sun's rays from it!

Alabama was and is a very charged state even and especially into the civil rights movement. Many of the killings and clan activity. We all know the name Selma, Alabama. It was said that if they could bring equality here then it would be easier to do so else where. So Alabama has a unique role in the racial history.
Apologize is a bit much but renounce or admonish the past is appropriate. It's still not really equal.

There is nothing wrong with apologizing, no matter how late for something that was an awful event in our past. Obviously it is something that hangs over our country to this date and the Governor feels that it is still something that must be faced head on. It's never too late to apologize for something that was so horrible. Slavery may be gone, but the great great grandchildren of the slaves still live down there and don't they deserve the apology.

Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina did this too.
Better apologize to the Native Americans too. And the British for dumping all of their perfectly good tea. And the Mexicans for the whole Texas thing. And .....
How many tax dollars do you think went into drafting up and formalizing these apologies? What a waste of time, effort, and money.

Thank you, I thought you were going the other way with this.
You're right, it's stupid for someone of today to apologize for something that happened over 150 years ago. That's like me saying "thank you for your support for out bombing of Japan where I wasn't even alive at that time. It's completely stupid.

Two quick answers before we all been labeled as racists.
(1) Because some people never grow out of it:
if you never grow out of it, you can always ask for free stuff.
(2) "Racist" is the most commonly mis-used label nowadays.
if you don't give me free stuff, you are a racists!
Do you see how it works now?

Good God. We have seriously GOT to get over slavery. It was awful, I'm not minimizing it, but it was A LONG TIME AGO. NO ONE who is still alive had ANYTHING to do with it - victim or perpetrator. Time for us all to look forward instead of backward.
