I have a large pond with no fish in it and there's always gross things growing floating. I heard that if you put certain fish in it, they'll eat this stuff and help keep it clean.

Anyone know if there's any truth to this? If so, what kind of fish should I put in it? I heard small mouth bass.

All fish, especially koi and goldfish, will add more than they remove. What goes in must come out. You will need a filter and pump. I recommend plants. If it gets plenty of sun add water lillies and bog plants for the shallower areas. Many nursery plants do well in ponds. Clean it first. A good balance of plants and your pond will stay nice. Add small fish that stay small to control mosquitos.

Fill it and let it run for a week, drain completely and repeat for 2 months before adding any fish. I've had customers do this before and lose hundreds of dollars in fish. Some suitable fish for your pond would be koi- 3 to 5 of these will be perfect if you buy them at around 5 inches in length, goldfish- 3 to 5 of any type just be prepared to sell their babies at the local farmer's market by the fall, if you have a heater, some cichlids would be very, very cool. My all time favorite thing in a waterfall type pond would definitely have to be endler's liverbearers. They are beautiful and boy, you end up with a wide variety and some really, truly beautiful fish, to sell, bring inside and have in an aquarium, or keep there to see how many you end out with! Best of luck :)

Most ponds use catfish or carp. They are "bottom feeders" and eat trash.
