Several answers really.
1) 42 as many have said, from Douglas Adam's books "the hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy". As I recall, the story goes, that a supercomputer was built, to work out the answer to the question of life the universe and everything. It eventually came up with the answer 42, however they then had to build another supercomputer, which was actually the Earth, to work out what the question was. Unfortunately just before the Earth managed to complete its task, it was destroyed by an alien race to make way for a hyper-space bypass.
2) As someone said, see the film. Monty Python's "The meaning of life" is one of the funniest films ever made and I would say it answers the question pretty well.
3) Taking the question literally, this question means, what is the meaning of "the word" life. The word life has many meanings, easily found in any dictionary, here is a link to a definition of the word life http://m-w.com/dictionary/life .
4) My own answer- Have some fun, before you die.
Finally, it occurs to me that the problem with the question, may be in its assumptive nature. Why assume that there is a "meaning of life", there could quite easily be none, this would likely be a view taken by many atheists. Life could be a wierd coincidence, with no meaning.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

There is no specific answer to your question, life means something different to everyone so there can be no direct answer, if you want 1 specific answer you will be waiting a very long time for it.
