I am having never-ending problems with my internet service after switching to a different internet provider. Last time it was a problem on their end and it took 4 days for them to fix it because they only rent the network and have no direct control over the technicians.

This time it is a more intermittent problems, for some reason the DSL light either goes out or starts flashing, and I can't load any web pages. However the computer doesn't show any actual loss of connection.

Any ideas?

This moden has "Power", "Ethernet", "DSL", and "Internet" lights.

The power light only goes out if it gets unplugged. The ethernet and internet lights seems to flicker and have no effect.

It is plugged directly into the computer after one too many arguments with tech support about the wireless hub.

We never had any problem with our internet before we switched. The only difference is the provider and the modem. (Well and now we aren't using the hub so the laptop gets no internet).

When the DSL light is off or flashing the network connection shows no data going out or in.

your dsl light should be on all the time (when connected) if it flashes occasionally that means the device is trying to connect to your DSL network

hope that helps

If the power light is flashing you have a problem with power to the unit. Of course, without power to the unit or with intermittant power to the unit, you have connection problems. If this is flashing, request a replacement modem.

The Transmit and Receive (Rx and Tx is a common abbreviation) lights are dark when nothing is being transmitted or received. They flicker under light load. The flicker speed goes up under load. Under heavy load they are on all the time. If you are transferring a large file the lights may be on steady during the duration. Because the data is transmitting, connection is still intact so there would be no loss of connection signal.

If the lights are on steady and you cannot load any web page, you may have something working in the background consuming your internet capacity. This could be some maleware you loaded. You may wish to install the free Zone Alarm firewall and see if this stops the problem. If it does, you need to remove the bug from the pc.

If you have wireless, you may be insecure and freeloaders or hackers are hogging your capacity for free (disconnect wireless at the router, use a cable to the router and see if it stops). If the problem stops when wireless is not connected, do not reactivate your wireless unless you impose all the security your router has available (encryption, MAC validation, password, etc.)

Perhaps this has helped. It is hard to provide the exact answer without further testing.
