When I had my son, I gained 40 pounds and it took a year to lose it all. I'm thinking about having another baby but only want to gain about 20 to 30 pounds. How do you gain the right amount of weight without starving your baby or getting too big? If it helps, I'm 5'2" and 120 pounds. I also ate a lot during the first trimester to help prevent morning sickness last time.

You should gain 25 - 30 pounds for optimal nutrition for your baby.
Try 1/2 pound per week for first 20 weeks, then 1 pound per week for last 20 weeks.
Avoid fried, fast, and junk food - even diet junk food.
Drink about 1/2 gallon of water a day.
Take your vitamins.
Walk/dance/cycle or run until you get too big [ off balance ].
Play soccer with your boy. Go swimming.

When you eat, eat healthy and in moderation. You won't starve your baby, he/she will take what it needs from your body. I gained 23 pounds with both of my pregnancies and found that it was just right. I had the weight off by my 6 week checkup.
(I'm also 120 pounds and am 5 2 and a half.)

It's tough to say what "the right amount of weight" is for each person. I've already gained 40lbs at 32 weeks. But I'm eating fairly healthy & active at the gym, so for me it's ok. My body just holds on to the weight differently.
You just have to eat the best you can & stay healthy

It's hard to say. You can't really control your weight during pregnancy unless the DR think you're gaining too much.

remember that being pregnant only requires 300 extra calories a day. that eating for 2 thing is just an excuse to eat a lot.
