We have a 3,000 gallon (plastic blue) quick-set POOL and we just moved to the country. My husband is telling me we can't set up the pool this summer because it will drain our well? Is this true or is he just being his usual "fun" self?

For the most part he's being his fun self. Old wells (20+ years) were not designed to have high water draw. Newer wells are though. They are put in knowing the propensity for severe water waste that we in the US are prone to.

If your husband won't budge then compromise with him on the matter. Tell him that you are willing to run the water for two hours per day until filled that way you don't deplete the water table and don't run the risk of draining the well.

In the mean time, make sure you know what the water chemistry of your well water is. One of the things that has been spreading across the states is bacterial iron. This is a form of bacteria that actually feeds on iron. As it's exposed to chlorine it will die off but will release the iron in organic form which can stain your pool and make balancing your water kind of tough.

He's a comedian, go ahead a fill it. PS. put 6" -8" of sand and then a 3mil black plastic tarp on top then set your pool on top of that, this will ensure rocks don't puncture the bottom and grass won't get sunlight to poke through the liner. Also most filters that come with those pools are too small, you would probably want to upgrade at your local pool supply store.

It shouldn't drain your well if you don't run your faucet at full blast. Just turn your hydrant about 1/4 of a turn and that will be fine. Since you live in the country, call the local fire department in the nearest town and they will fill it up quick and it wasn't that expensive. Just ask them over the phone how much they charge. I'm sure they do this alot with everyone filling their pools.

I would call to get water delivered if at all possible. Your well may have plenty of water to fill it but it may also put a strain on it depending on your area. I filled my 13000 gallon pool from the well with no problems. many Fire Departments do this for low cost and it is much quicker than a hose.

I may very well drain your well (sorry for the pun).

There are alternatives, in most rural areas there are people that will haul water, usually to fill cisterns and such. You could have one haul enough to fill your pool and get to enjoy it without the danger of running out of water. Most fill from a municipal supply, so you will get better water for your pool as a bonus.
