Your DSL uses the pair of wires that also brings voice into your home. The Imbedded Local Exchange Carrier (ATT, Verizon, Embarq or whoever your carrier is) maintains these lines and hardware. If you have Earthlink DSL, the Earthlink hardware is at the Imbedded Local Exchange Carrier's central office. You can have problems with the line from the central office (and the carrier needs to address it), or with the modem, or even with your equipment (router, hub, local wiring, etc.). We cannot determine from your info which is faulty. Contact Earthlink and see what they can do to help isolate it. If it continues, you may wish to get the Imbedded Local Exchange Carrier's DSL and see if it is better.
DSL is usually slower and cheaper than CATV. Often, for the applicaitons you use, the speed difference you realize is not substantial.
CATV carriers provide Internet at faster speeds. Sometimes they are more reliable and some times less reliable than DSL. Usually they are faster than DSL but not all the time.
CATV can have cable problems in their feed to you and you can have problems in your router and LAN just like you could have now.
Having said all that, there is no way to definitively state which is more dependable.
One thing to check is the firmware of your router. Your disconnection may be a router problem that the latest firmware may fix. Check the web site of your router maker and see if they have a newer version of firmware and if they do, install it per their directions. This may end the entire problem BUT I cannot say this for sure.

I even have had the two, dsl is solid in case you are able to desire to run countless computers at one time because of the fact the style of purchasers on a dsl connection would not count it won't sluggish it down, although 2 or extra purchasers on cable slows it down alot. Cable is alot speedier if pay for it, dsl is quickly yet is companies to issues. in case you have no longer have been given alot of purchasers i could recommend cable.

I found Comcast cable internet vastly superior to Pacific Bell DSL in terms of both reliability and speed. I get far fewer line drops and the speed is about 8 times the speed of DSL.
Of course, this is all location dependent, because there are miles and miles of wires involved. Just because cable works better for me at my location doesn't mean you'll get the same results at your location.
