The Reagan Revolution was the culmination of a conservative movement which began with the failure of Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential elections.

Conservatives who were upset at many of the counter-cultural trends of the 1960s joined together in the mid 1960s to begin to establish think tanks and other institutions to spread their conservative message. The prime spokesman for most of the 1970s was Ronald Reagan, who was elected governor of California in 1966.

To find the intellectual underpinings, read Barry Goldwater's Concscience of a Conservative and the books of William F Buckley. Another good source would be the works of the Heritage Foundation from the 1970s.

Wiki has a good article on conservatism with lots of sources:

First focus on the political, economic, and cultural events of the 60's and 70's.

The Reagan Revolution was a reaction to these events.
I was in middle school, high school and college during these years and quite an admirer of President Reagan at the time although now I disagree with some of his policies.

People in the 60's and 70's were spoiled due to the hard work and success of the previous generations. They became bored because life wasn't a constant struggle. When people are bored, they use their excess energy to lash out. Reagan (to some degree of success) tried to put the cat back in the bag and return the american public back to the traditional values of God, family, country. (Work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone, and you can live the American Dream.) I believe he was the last 'real' president we've had.

Somewhat encouraging that you can't find that BS. Reagan was put into power by group that had to stop President Carter gradual phase in of gas de-regulation. -ronny deregulated overnight price sky rocketed and than came down few percentage points.- President Carter airelines line deregulation -ronny by firing air traffic controllers put a spike in number of start-up airlines, because they could not makeup discounted price by increasing volume of business. He had to destroy President Carters attempt to make SS solvent by illegally selling high quality bonds Carter set up, and spending 8 trillion dollars on one covert operation called Ivy Bells this comes from book Vail Secret War of CIA First Edition by Bob Woolworth. Who clams for 10 he could have rewired all underseas cable in the world. Think how much LBJ spent on War on Poverty. In just mention book CIA told Reagan USSR was about to go through sever population problem so -ronny blew hundreds of trillion on defense system not needed. President Carter set up Defense board to evaluate defense needs and weapons systems.-roony took years to get rid of it. He want 1950's weapons instead of cruse missiles and smart bombs. About how well ronney handled government finance read Trumpet of Politic by Dave Stokeman. American Business read America What Went Wrong. Lived through all the other stuff and all papers and magazines are long gone. Reaction to oil crises and hostiage crises was easy spin for real reasons he was put into power.
