My sister is being harassed by the current girlfriend of an ex. The girlfriend found my sister's number in Mr. Wonderful's phone and has been calling my sister around the clock for the last 3 days, leaving messages and being a general nuisance. My sister is doing her best to ignore the whole thing but I think that she ought to get the authorities involved with anyone who is this crazy that would spend their time this way. (Clearly I'm the "big sister" and I know that she is free to handle this however she sees fit, I just want to be able to give her a good suggestion if she decides to file some sort of complaint).

We live in Ohio. What is the proper channel to follow. Is this a state, local or federal thing (my sister's phone is a cell). She doesn't want to have to change her number over this thing since she's had it for a long time.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks you guys - this is all good advice. She talked to the ex and while he did offer to help her change her number he doesn't want to get involved with telling his charming girlfriend to grow up. Whatever, that's why they're not together anymore.

If she goes to the police, should it be the police in the town where she lives or where the girlfriend lives?

It's not worth it-change the number. That is the first thing the authorities are going to tell you to do anyway.

And it's actually simple since all you have to do is text message friends in bulk with the new number.

The police where she lives. The should take it from there. If she doesn't get a response from the locals she can go to the state police. The police will do not a whole lot. The will file a report and tell her to change her number and not have any contact with her. Which actually with crazy stalkers the best thing to do since any contact, be it positive or negative, is the attention they crave.

And tell her to look on the bright side, the ex is obviously and idiot if he is dating a psycho.

I also wanted to tell you in regards to a comment below that you cannot legally record a phone call in most states without the other persons consent. I doubt your sister wants to end up in trouble.

Could that be for telecommunications harassment? In Ohio the crime is a first degree misdemeanor criminal offense. It covers harassing or unwanted phone calls. The venue or jurisdiction of the offense can be at either end of the phone call. Meaning if you call her at her home and that is in that small town then they can charge you for violating the statute. You may want to consult an attorney, and stop calling her at home AND at work until you get a professional's opinion on where you stand.

There actually is a number to dial after you get a harring call. I think you press#55 after the call. I think that will log the call for a police report. my suggestion is to call your phone company and ask them what to do agaisnt a harrasment. they would be able to help you with this problem much better than anyone else.

She can still change her phone number. all she has to do i send an mass text to everyone in her contact list with her new number.
Other than changing her number she will have to get the police involved though

Since it's a cell phone, most companies have a service where you can reject or block calls from a certain number.

Also, since it's her cell, and the company has records of all the calls that she receives, she could take the phone record to the police and show a pattern of consistent harassment.

Good luck!

You should block the call, not "reject" it because if you reject it, she will still be able to call. On the cell phones now, they have a setting where you don't have to contact anyone to block a certain number. You should ask your wireless dealer about this. Getting the authorities involved usually won't do any good, but good luck with everything!
