Nowadays, they're about the same thing. Back when, the difference was that a sunroof had an opaque panel, & a moonroof had glass, sometimes with an opaque inner panel.

From the dictionary:

moonroof /moon-roof/
–noun, plural -roofs. a transparent section of an automobile roof that can be propped open, removed entirely, or remain fixed within the roof.

sunroof (suhn-roof)
n. A roof on a motor vehicle, such as an automobile, having a panel that can be slid back or raised.

In short, a moonroof always lets light in; a sunroof can block out light from above and both can be openable.

Years in the past a solar roof grew to become right into a translucent or clean panel that would desire to open for ventilation. The Ford Motor organization presented the 1st moon roof interior the mid-60's on the Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. The moon roof grew to become into an opaque panel, regularly painted to experience to vehicle, that slid open into the roof. Now days a solar roof or a moon roof are synonymous.

I have had a car with both. The moonroof has two portions that close it off entirely from letting in sunlight. Once you hit the button to open it, usually a solid cover slides back and then the clear portion opens to reveal an opening in the car roof. A sunroof usually does the same thing, without the solid cover.

These days mostly just a matter of semantics. It did mean sun roof, closed by metal until you open it. Moon roof, glass, even when closed you can see the moon.

Usually a factory installed power unit is called a 'moonroof' but really there is no difference except the name...call it what you want!
