I kind of find it funny that democrats are closer to Goldwater politics then republicans.

They probably do. They've rejected his smaller government conservatism and embraced the big goverment social conservatism. This newcomers like Fred Thompson are going to pander more to evangelicals than economic conservatives. Goldwater is only mentioned by Republicans when they feel like it. They know they have dissapointed him.
