The main feature of course is the retractable top that "Converts" the car from a roof covered auto to a non roof covered auto. With the top down it gives you more feel of freedom from an enclosed space. You experience more of the drive with the wind/sun/smell of the outdoors with the convenience of having a roof available should the weather change. The cars are usually heavier than their counterparts due to more reinforcement needed under the car to reduce the flex since there is no true roof.

The convertible it a car that has a top that comes off, or folds down into the trunk, or behind the back seat.

Because it "converts" into a car without a top.
