You will get an IV for fluid, and be put on a Pitocin drip. This will induce uterine contractions. The nurses will check for dilation frequently, and if needed, you doctor will break your water to speed things along.
I hate to tell you, but the pit drip tends to intensify labor pains.... you may want to try and wait it out if possible, and go without the pitocin drip....
Either way, good luck and congrats.

I was asked to be at the hospital at 7:30am and I was taken into the hospital room/delivery room....I was given an IV and the Dr induced using some type of pill or cream {not really sure which} up the vagina and then i waited......I was also hooked up to a lot of monitors so the nurses could tell what the baby was doing and what my body was doing, etc....and I waited....and waited. The doctor finally induced again using a drip in the IV and things started rolling then. After about 36 hours I finally had my beautiful daughter.
If I were you I would induce ASAP because you know when you are going to have the baby and I think it would just be better for you.

The doctor can induce labor by an IV drip medication called pitocin or there is a gel they can put on the cervix to start softening and opening the cervix. I was overdue with my daughter and was having rather non productive contractions so my doc started me on some pitocin. Out of nowhere I had some major contractions hard and fast. A friend of mine didn't start having contractions until nearly the next day while on pitocin. So, it depends on how "ready" your body is to accept the medication and start the labor. The drawback to this is inducing labor increases the likelihood that you will have to have a c-section. It is like your body and the baby just aren't ready yet and if you force it your body just won't cooperate for a natural delivery. So, depending on what your ideal birth plan is...either start eating right immediately or call the doctor :-)

Inductions before the due date are usually because of an expected complication with the mother or the baby (like a developing health concern with the mother, or a very large baby). But then sometimes it can just be that the doctor wants to make it easier for himself. If your doctor wants to induce you early, ask him WHY he is doing it. If it's for a valid health reason then you might want to consider it. If he can't give you a good reason, the forget it...just wait for nature! As for inductions being more painful, they can be. I'm given to understand that Pitocen (did I spell that anywhere near right?) brings on contractions hard and fast, but from the very beginning (instead of gradually building). But then again, I had a friend who was induced last year (because of high blood pressure) and she didn't seem to think it was that bad. Her labor went very smoothly and only lasted like 8 hours. So I guess it really depends on the person? Good luck!

Natural is better for the baby, but I ended up insisting after 41 weeks, when 2 weeks prior I had said no. I just felt like my baby was getting way too big...she was 9lbs 3 oz. literally ripped me a new one.
None the less, I checked into the hospital, they got me dressed into the gown, IV with the pitocin. Strapped on the fetal monitor, and the contraction monitor. Checked on me every 30 min. to an hour. After about 12 hours my water broke and the contractions went through the roof...so they check and I was only 4 cm dilated. After about an hour of contractions one on top of another and I still hadn't dilated any further I opted for the epidural. They aren't supposed to let you go any longer than 24 hours when inducing, but another14 to 15 hours later my girl was finally born. They put me on oxygen because the baby's heartbeat kept dropping.Even with the pitocin I wasn't dilating very fast at all. After 25 hours if I didn't dilate that last cm within 30 minutes they were going to do a c-section. Also up until I opted for the epidural I was allowed juices and Popsicles. After that nothing! I'm surprised I found the energy to push, but nothing like a banana as a focal point to get you motivated. Not letting a PG woman eat for that long is abuse. I was miserable in that respect.

I wanted an all natural birth and my water broke while I was doing dishes and I waited for contractions and 5 hrs later nothing so I called my doc and he said I should have already went to the hospital cause baby can get an infection if you wait to long. So I went and they said I would have to get an IV of potosin and they took me to my room and Got the iv started. It wasnt 15 min and I started feeling pains then like 20 min later I was having full blown contractions. I started contracting at 10:20 pm and at 11:30 the next morning still no baby no sleep and in the most pain I had ever felt. I finally had to get the epidural. After the epidural I didnt feel the contractiona and I was able to sleep. I delivered my daughter at 2:46 pm. 14 HRS and 26 Min of labor. My cousin had her baby wo potison and it only took 6 hrs and my brothers gf 9 1/2 hrs. everyone was amazed at how long it took. My daughters heart rate dropped twice and I almost went in for a c section. I didnt have a choice seeing my body wasnt contracting on my own. I know its hard to wait and you want it over with. If you want the pain go for it but I would suggest the epidural.

hmm my story...lol. well with my 3 and fourth I was induced. They broke my water first and then started to give me patosin to get the contractions started. It went ALOT faster then my other 2 pregnancies...The potosin makes the contractions stronger faster so that is the only thing I didnt like. Your body is not as used to it as the "natural" stuff. Not sure about your pain relief theories either but the epidural was great. With the first 2 of my pregnancies i did it natural. That was an experience I would never regret and loved to experience BUT once I got the epidural it was a godsent...lol. It is not bad. good luck

i was induced on the 19th of last month at 2pm they started the pitocin(sp) drip....i went from being not at all dilated to 4cm in about 3 hours.. then it slowed down...I was in labor for 22 hours. i don't know if it hurts any worse then going into labor on your own b/c this is my first child.. but it hurt! I had nasty back labor. i waited too long to get the epidural...once i got it i actually slept through my contractions for a bit.
yes it hurts.. yes it's scary.... but so worth it!
Good Luck and God Bless!

i went into labor on my own but the labor stopped and they decided to induce me anyway because i was only 3 days early and there was a blizzard that day.
anyway, there is no way to tell how long it will take, but i will tell you that it's a drug called petosin and it makes the contractractions more intense and very painful. but it's up to you. labor is painful anyway and the bright side is if you get induced there is less anxiety of when you'll go into labor.

ive been induced 3 times. Each time was a little different. the first time I went in at 6pm, got induced with a pill ior gel
being put by my cervix, started contracting about 12am, had baby at 7:35. The 2nd time, went in at 6am, got induced at 7, same with pill, started contracting at 10am, had baby at 2:35. About 8 weeks ago. I went in at 8am. they had to wait for baby to become reactive with her heartbeat, so I didnt get induced untill 11am, Started contracting about 12pm, had baby at 5:10. Each womens body is differnet. I had it really easy each time. I was lucky, hopefully you are too. I had to have the stuff to speed it up, i dont know how to spell it (pitocin?) haha. Good luck with baby.
