There are a few other thoughts on it:
~The Hindus believed 2012 marks the pause between the in-breath and out-breath of Brahma, when time stands still briefly allowing amazing things to happen.
~On December 21st 2012 there is a rare astrological line-up of planets that only happens every 26,000 years.
~The Aztec calendar also ended at this date.
All this is from Discover Atlantis by Diana Cooper, book review of it on this webpage:

They had to end their calendar somewhere! It doesn't mean a thing. No one knows when life as we know it will end, if ever. Better to concern yourself with today. If there is something to this idea that a specific date is predestined to be "the end", then it's predestined and no one can do anything about it, right?
Anyway, to answer your question, here are a few things I've read:
1. Our planet will be lined up directly between the sun and the black hole in the middle of the Milky Way. This happens every 25,800 years. We don't know what happens if anything.
2. Some people who calculate Biblical events seem to think that 2012 is the correct year, approximately, for Armageddon.
3. As you mentioned, the Mayan calendar ends.
4. The Hopi tribe of Native Americans have prophecies that predict the end of our world as we know it. The time, they say, roughly coincides with December 2012.
There are many others and they can all be found online. Don't listen to everything you hear. The end of time has been predicted many times to have been long before now, but we are still here.
Best wishes.

Nothing to say wrt the question, but obviously Gene has never been to Mexico, where there is still a thriving population of Mayan Indians who continue to speak the Mayan language and practice Mayan customs. Wow.

No one except some people who thrive on fantasies. The Mayans never said anything would happen. It's just when their old calendar runs out and since the bronze age savages are thought to have killed each other off about 1100 years ago, they never made another.
