We live in Woodbridge, VA. Small 3 storey townhouse. There's just 2 of us who are always out because of our full time work (12 hours a day, Mon-Fri). We do laundry twice a month. Our water provider is PWCSA (Prince William Country Service Authority).

Our first house was in Woodbridge VA and yes water is much higher than we pay in Fairfax. There's not much one can do other than to conserve and not waste water unless your bill is outrageous or happens to jump significantly that may warrant checking for a leak between the water meter and where it comes into your house.

Basically you find the outside water meter and the digitals or a dial will indicate water flow. Then someone goes inside and finds the main water valve. Once shutting off the main water valve, everything should stop on the outside meter reading. If its doesn't and keeps running, you probably have a leak underground which might be rather costly and at the owner's expense.

Our quarterly water bill from Fairfax County Water Authority (FCWA) is much cheaper like maybe $80 per quarter for a family of 4...maybe higher in summer bec we have a good sized garden. On the other hand some of my coworkers living in Maryland have had water bills as high as $100 per month from WSSC. Ouch! In fact I went over to a coworker's house just to fix his toilets bec he was a Big Guy.

You need to look at your bill or call the water company and see how the water is billed. Some areas charge by the gallon and some by the cubic foot (7-1/2 gallons). You may also be paying a sewer charge based on water usage. Many companies also have a minimum billing. Where I lived in Ohio, it was 2000 cubic feet per quarter whether I used that much or not. If you know where your meter is, you can check for flow while making sure nothing is running. They usually have a small triangle that turns when small amounts are flowing that will show small leaks in the system. Hope this helps.
