I have a 56k modem connection and I'm thinking about switching to an DSL modem. Can anyone give me some info on the costs and different packages they have available? What do I have to do to switch? Is the modem included in the package?

Most DSL providers (at least in my area) provide a modem for free or free after rebate. The packages start at $15 per month. You will also need an ethernet port or wireless card in your computer to use DSL.

It surely does ( I know from my personal experience ). One cannot compare using a 56K modem to a using DSL Line or a Cable Connection. The reason why a DSL connection and a Cable connection are normally called " High Speed or Broadband " Connection is because compared to a 56 K Modem, they are incredibly faster. So if you chat using a 56K modem it will take longer and will surely be slower as well. You will see the difference because of the slight time lag it takes for your chat messages to appear on the computer Chat Screen)of the other person.

Makesure your PC has an ethernet card. Most new PCs these days have on in it. Then you need a DSL modem that is usually provided by your ISP of choice. It mighjt also include a router. Verizon includes a router that is also a modem as well as a wireless router. You also need a cable to go from the wall socket of your phone line to the modem, which would be included with teh modem, and a CAT-5 cable to go from the router to the enternet connection on the back of your PC. You also need filters to go on your phone line to seperate the voice form teh data signal. Again, ask your ISP. 3 or 4 of those should be included.

The first thing you need is a Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in your PC. These should be relatively inexpensive at a Best Buy or CompUSA. Even Wal-Mart would carry them.

You then need to check and see if DSL is in your area. You can find that out by going to a DSL carriers website, they will have a place that you can enter your phone number to see if their service is available to you.

If it is you can then place your order with them, and they will bring you a DSL router and you would plug the router into the NIC card and after going through the setup (hopefully they would have a Tech that would do that for you) you'll be good to go and be zooming about the internet in no time.

dsl.yahoo.com should be able to tell you if you can get DSL.

Place DSL modem CD in drive, and allow software to install.

Next, plug modem into a LAN or USB port.

You're done.

For prices...talk to your local ISPs.

Generally, the modem and required cables will be included free (and remain property of the ISP).

Cost depends on your local phone companies packages.

DSL usually costs $25-$50 per month, depending on the speed you want.

If BellSouth is your phone company, try www.fastaccess.com.

You could also try www.dslreports.com to find providers in your area.

A DSL modem is almost always included for free, sometimes free after rebate.

If you have BellSouth for phone service, I would start with www.fastaccess.com. If you have someone else, I would start with www.dslreports.com

it depends on the isp.
dsl modem connects to the computer either through ethernet (RJ45) or through USB.

old 56k modem is then not used at all.

$40 - 60 US a month for average plans, modems are either bought or rented.
you may get away with buying a modem from ebay and using it with your isp. ask them first about having to buy theirs or not.

get dsl service and use an ethernet cord not a phone line and a seat belt because you might fall out of chair when you realize how much faster the internet really is

First check if you have a dsl provider in your area
and compare the features. also please take note they will check your number(tel no.) if it is available for DSL.
SBC/AT&T is best in price, it depends on the package you want. and i think they have a rebate for the modem.
Verizon is okey too, if its available.
go to google search and type this: dsl providers in .......( city, state)

Good Luck!!!

You'll need to make sure you have a network card in the computer, other than that, most companies will provide you with a step by step walkthrough of how to setup the computer.
