It's the description of someone who thinks for his or herself and lives by his or her own rules. In the process, he or she is misunderstood or condemned by the masses - or the World. But he or she follows his or her heart, dreams, and goals and tries to make a success of his or her own life. Or, at least be the controller of his or her own life and destiny. The privilege is being Free to be you.

We all like the idea of being “individuals" and stand out from the crowd or "tribe" as pointed out by Nietzsche. There is some truth in what he is saying but I do not agree with him completely. By nature, humans are social creatures, and they need society in order to function as individuals. It is not so much a question of being overwhelmed by the tribe, but integrating with the crowd, in order to reap the social benefits. If a person insists on not merging with the crowd it will come at a great cost, as pointed out by Nietzsche. Being lonely and frightened barely touches the tip of the iceberg, such a person is sure to be labeled a social outcast with no support system other then a few stray individuals who refuse to conform to the norm, and that is indeed a very lonely life and a terribly high price to pay.
Personally I feel this is an over simplified statement.

It is akin the the Robert Frost poem about the fork in the road...and he took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference in his life.
It speaks about 'group mentality -vs- originality.
Conformity or Non-Conformance.
I've always wanted to be me......if you have it..I don't want it.
When you start to wear what I have on... I'll find something else.

It's true. We must remain the individuals we are, rather than be one of the followers.

that's the truth...to find yourself is a lonely yet rewarding path and a life long journey...to always surround one's self in others is a means to "losing" one's self

i think it means that if you want to be your own person you got to be able to take the pressure of people ganging up on you, and if you can take the pressure, you will be able to feel the benefit's of being individual.
