My grandmother used to say "A place for everything and everything in its place". Get organized.

If you have a lot of clothes and shoes, sort them into 3 piles, keeping in mind that if you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it.

Pile 1 - Keep - all items you wear regularly
Pile 2 - Throw Away (or keep for rags)
Pile 3 - Donate - anything that still has some wear

Eliminate the paperwork. Go through all your papers, notes, etc. Toss the junk and separate the rest into labeled boxes.

Clean and organize your drawers. Fold your clothes and put all like items together (one drawer for bras & undies, one drawer for tshirts, etc).

Organize your closet by totally emptying it. Hang like clothes together (all jeans, etc). Put shoes together as pairs and line neatly in bottom of closet. Use shelving for storage, preferably in labeled boxes.

Get underbed storage boxes to make use of the space. It's a great place to store sweaters and winter wear.

Most kids have sentimental items, like stuffed animals. They are dust collectors. Pick out 2 or 3 favorites, and either store or donate the rest.

Put shelves on your walls or use a bookcase for your books, nick nacks and such.

Have a designated place to put your dirty clothes (but not in your closet).

Change your sheets, vacuum and dust once a week. It will only take 20 minutes. Empty your laundry basket several times a week.

When you're done sorting and cleaning, pat yourself on the back, take a good look around, and enjoy it! Then have a garage sale, and what doesn't sell, donate.

You don't need to buy anything to keep your room clean. Be creative. Most of what you need you have in your home. Start by walking through with a garbage bag. Don't be shy, throw away, throw away! :) Next, make piles (keep, garbage, and donate). After you bag up the donate and throw away the no longer good clothing, sort your keep clothes. Winter (or off season) go into totes. Hang jeans and dresses, etc. and make designated drawers for undies and socks, t-shirts, shorts, pajamas, etc. Next clean up. Wipe down your furniture and vacuum, you know. You probably have trinket boxes and such laying around for your headbands, baretts, etc. Just take a look, then sort all those out and put away. If you have a place for everything, cleaning up will be WAY easier next time you do so! Good Luck! :)

Instead of looking on the Internet go to the nearest Home Depot or Lowe's, or Container Stores they have bins, racks, etc.
Also start daily by clearing/cleaning one area of the room. Discard 5-10 items daily. This hint will keep you from being overwhelmed.
When you buy one item, discard another in its place.
My personal hint is if you haven't used the item in over one year then you probably wont use it again. Time to let it go.
get rid of all the papers that you wont and don't probably need.
I bought some of those shoe organizer that you hang in the closet and use them for my purses and small items and the lower compartments are for my shoes. I let go of my many shoes that I had for many years and never used.
Good luck to you and go easy on yourself. It can be done and its a great feeling of accomplishment.

First get some containers, plastic or use emty boxes if you can't afford to buy plastic containers. Then pick up all the things and put them into catagories. Example: all cosmetics in one box, all books in one box, all clothes in drawers- all socks together, all bras together, all shorts together, all other clothes hung on hangers and in closet. Then decide where you will keep each catagory of items and always put them away so your room won't get so bad again. If you do a little every day it won't seem so overwhelming. Martha Stewart's web site has some ideas.

You will find this site really helpful. She advocates doing things in 15 minute blocks of time. "Baby steps."

Hope it helps.
