I have no true answer to your question but I would think it became a short hair thing after someone came up with scissors, hacking your hair off with a knife had to be an ouch. It had to be a problem keeping the hair clean and bug free when it hung to your waist in the old days. No decent soap, no running water--then there was a solution, cut it off. Just a thought.

men have had short hair for centuries. women have only recently had shorter hair. during the 1920's short bobs became the style for women who were called "flappers".
