Small 4 cylinder cars or most (but not all) hybrids.
Honda Fit or Civic, Toyota Yaris or Prius or Corolla, Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Nissan Sentra, Chevy Cobalt and the Dodge Caliber are examples.
They also have the added benefit of being low cost cars too. Best of both worlds.
The Prius is far and away the most fuel efficient vehicle offered right now.

It really depends a lot on what kind of driving you do. If you do a lot of stop and go driving in town then a hybrid is definitely the best call. The Prius is probably the best well known of those but there are hybrids available from Honda and soon Nissan. If you do a lot of freeway and open road driving then a sub compact like a Honda or Nissan or Toyota is probablly the best. The Yaris, the Sentra, the Corolla are compacts with good mileage.

a Nissan sentra is real car good on gas, so are some of the Toyota models also, and the yaris is also real good on gas, anyone of these will get you well over 35 miles to the gallon, there's a lot to choose from now on mileage.you should go out looking some day ,you,ll be surprised at how many are getting better mileage, good luck on it.

When I had my civic (I had it for 6 years) I spent very little on gas and it lasted awhile.
So, my suggestion is a Honda Civic. Low maintaince as well.
