I think we should grow old disgracefully but with style. I don't think we should run off with that young thing from up the road because that's just makes us look silly. But do things that are not usually associated with an older person, for instance I have just learnt to ride a motorbike at the age of 53. Also in the summer I am going on a walking holiday alone in Scotland and I intend to sleep rough under the stars. My children are worried about me. They keep telling me not to hitch a ride or talk to strangers and make sure I have waterproof clothes etc.

It depends on the circumstances or occasion. I find it best to be a bit of a chameleon, sometimes graceful (ha ha) and sometimes eccentric and just occasionally I turn into a Grumpy Old Woman. It keeps everybody else on their toes. It is a lot easier to get away with being eccentric as you get older.
When I'm on my bike and overtaken by a jogger, I become a graceful old lady but heaven help any motorist who tries to endanger my life!

This questions comes to me on a personal level. Recently I celebrated my 54th birthday and my philosophy on this is to live life as it comes natural to you. Dancing has always been a passion for me and as we know the Gay clubs are dedicated to youth, I say phooey!!!!!!!!!!!!! My partner & I met at a dance club in Hollywood in 1981 and have been dancing all the way thru it to this very day.
Who cares what the others are saying, its your (and my) life and we/you should simply enjoy it whether that means being eccentric or outrageous. Obviously some of can pull it off better then others, there's where the condemnation of others enters. Ignore those that find it easy to judge others for living life to their fullest. Go out with a bang I say.

Sylvia d I would have killed him!
But as for growing old gracefully-no way.
I am just being my old speed demon self and into high tech. stuff.
One drink and I'll dance the night away and watch the youngsters drop by the wayside as I do it.
None of this rockin' chair stuff for me unless I get thrown off a jet ski again and break the rest of my spine.
We will do as we will and hopefully, enjoy what we are doing.

I will be just 'me', the way I have been all my life, no matter how old I become. It is for others to figure out whether I have any grace or am a graceless eccentric.

Not in our house. My hubbies quite eccentric and he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. He's very popular in the shops in town cos they think he's funny.( I do mean funny ha ha and not funny peculiar.)
One of his hobbies is trying to embarrass me in public, after nearly 40 years it still doesn't work very often.
Have to admit it did a couple of weeks ago when he told me to hurry up and pack the shopping.
His actual words were " Can't you hurry up a bit, If I'd known we were going to be here so long I never would have took the viagra before we left home."
I was horrified! and the cashier nearly fell of her chair with laughter.
Must say though I still love him and wouldn't want him to be any different.

Youngers will like you better if you grow old gracefully.
Otherwise youngers will think you are an eccentric and angry old fart...
How do you want to be seen ?
