Actually, the reason is so that you can shave of the dead skin cell layer. It has nothing to do with removal of hair on the body. Everyone is covered in a layer of dead skin cells. As new cells are created and old ones die, the old ones get pushed to the outside of your skin so they shed off. Unfortunately, the dead skin cells interfere with how sensitive your skin is and how well you can feel things. Thus, swimmers tend to shave down so that they remove as much dead skin as they can so they can feel the water better and can grab more water every stroke making them faster in the water. Swimmers often shave their palms for this reason. As for hair on the head, swim caps are generally used and so they don't have to shave their heads as they do not swim with their head.

Swimmers just don't want to get rid of their body hair. When you shave you lose layers of dead skin. Removing hair and the dead skin reduces drag in the water.
As a swimmer myself, I don't think it really improves my time but its a psychological thing. I don't have for a few months during the season, then the day before a big meet I shave my body. It's a routine I do, so I know I am ready to compete.
Hope this helps!

When one is swimming hair slows the swimmer down. It resists the water causing the swimmer to go slower. They shave it off to help the go faster.

Simple aerodynamics. Hair creates drag which in turn creates resistence which in turn slows the body's movement through the water. That being said, hair is removed to increase speed.

I qualified for and swam in two National AAU championships back in the 1960's. Regardless of the answers you might get on this site, trust me... it's all psychological. Supposedly less resistance in the water, but that's just bull. Psychological. Like doing every last thing you can possible do to "peak" for a meet.

it is not any diverse than women human beings removing their physique hair. the two are unnatural and the inducement at the back of them is by and huge merchandising and marketing and industry (agencies producing or advertising hair removing products). Facial hair removing products have long been prevalent for adult men, so the corporate is basically in basic terms being prolonged. So in case you desire to ask "what's incorrect with adult men those", you apart from mght could desire to ask "what's incorrect with women human beings these days", with the aid of fact it is precisely an identical element.

To lower the resitence. When we are swimming the hair on our body stands straight up wich pushes against the water causing us to go slower therefore we shave our legs and put swim caps on.

common myth:

its more "aerodynamic"
-please, unlease you're wearing a man sweater

reality:
psychological

seriously though, when you're fully tapered (rested) and shaved down, it feels AWESOME when you hit the water. Absolutely awesome. Psychologically, it worked for me. EVERY time I shaved, my times improved from previous performances that year, regardless of whether I had 2 days or 2 weeks of rest.
