The key is being educated. It is NOT cruel. (unless ur baby doesn't like it) I dunked my daughter @ 8 weeks old & started a baby & me swim class. She absolutely loves the water & loves to "swim". YOU have to do what is best for you though & if ur uncomfortable with it he will be too. Keep a smile on ur face, blow in theirs & then real quick under & done. After words a "yea! good baby!" goes a long way. And no i'm not an idiot but a college grad in the medical field who works with babies every day.

It is pretty cruel. I've never done it, but I know people that have. However, they did it for totally different reasons. They actually did it to a) make the child LESS afraid of water (because I guess they learn the concept of holding their breath earlier). and to b) promote better lung expansion at a younger age...(i don't know about the scientific truth in this, but that's just what they told me).
Like I've said, I've never done it to my kid. However, some of my family do it to theirs and all their kids were able to swim pretty well at the age of 4....weird...

I did it Monday with my 3 month old. Had her on the edge of the blow up pool...she kept leaning over forward so I let her get her face in and pulled her up. She gasped but after that didn't seem to care either way.
I'm extremely protective over my girl, but something inside me wants her to feel comfortable and confident around water. I don't know what it is...like if she's cautious but not scared she'll maybe be more aware of safety around water.

I think it would be best to give that baby some baths and toys. My kids love the water and aren't confused whether I am going to dunk them under or not. That sounds like the parents that push their kids too far, hoping that their kid will swim earlier than the others.

um....15 wks no!! I blow in my 14month olds face and dunk him real fast and he loves it, but I would never try it on a 15 wk old baby!!! they seem to young to be going under water....
blowing in there face causes them to hold their breath for a second...this gives me the chance to put my son under really quick and bring him back out...he loves it so much...when he was 15 weeks we put him in the pool (heated) but we never took him under water!! But he seems to love the water and hates to get out!! I would just first consult my pediatrician on the subject...15 wks just seems soooo young...I am also just not sure about the truth about it making them un scared or scared of the water....I dont think many people remember things from when they were that young!

OMG if someone would have told me this I would have told her to get the heck out of my house and never return. She is mental.
I have a 3 year old. I NEVER did that to him. He loves water. Last summer I was working with him to get him to go under water. His swimming instructor was on maternity leave so I worked with him for 10 weeks on my own. He never seemed to want to go under water but he loves the pool to death. Finally out of random air my son goes "what my trick mom" and went underwater.
I suggest NOT trying to purposely drown your child. Thats just wrong. I would however suggest you contact local swim instructors and see when they suggest you start "Mommy/Daddy and Me " swimming classes. My son was able to start at 6 months. Of course they will not be swimming by age 1 but they will love the water. It will be second nature to them and they will have no fears. My son has went to year-round swimming classes (indoors) since the age of 6 months. He goes 2-3 times a week.

THAT WOULD BE STUPID! babies do not know how to hold there breath! Therefore the chance of the baby Aspirating the water into there lungs is great! They could either choke to death on the water, or when its aspirated into the lungs, it causes pnuemonia , which also can lead to death.

ive heard abt it before, idk if i would do it tho. i think its ok to teach babies how to swim, not dunk them underwater. if u teach babies how to float when theyre young, they will learn how to swim when they get older. i would be very careful if u do choose to dunk ur baby. u better know how to do infant CPR just in case the child swallows water, or stops breathing. that seems kind of young tho.

Why would you want him to be scared when he's older? This sounds crazy to me.
