I will answer this from another prospective.

I am an Independent and follow no party line. I try to vote for the "best candidate". Being independent, I check out ALL candidates, not just one party.

I want to know the candidates political history; what is his/her experience, what did he do in the past about an issue, what has he written or said. If he is a Senator, what is his voting record. Governor? - what has he done in his state. How close is his relationship to lobbyists - and which ones - and how many perks has he accepted. In Congress, how many votes has be been absent from - and which ones did he avoid. What was he doing when he should have been there voting.

Is he on any committees? Which ones and what are his opinions. If he was mayor - how did his city/town fare under his leadership.

I don't look at his personal life nor his past unless his behavior was so agregious to warrant taking it into consider it. (our current one was a drug and alcohol abuser, draft dodger and was AWOL from the nat'l guard on a regular basis - just as a for instance). I don't care how many wives (or husbands if female) he has had, don't care if he has been unfaithful to his spouse. I don't care if his children don't like him. I don't even care much about what he says. I care about what he DOES, what actions he has taken, what opinions he has rendered on things of a national interest.

Does he address my concerns, are we on the same side on issues that are important to me, does he speak his mind or talk in platitudes, does he answer questions directly or does he dodge them?

My issues right now are: the War (end it NOW), Health care (fix it NOW) and the economy (it is currently WRECKED).

It's a good thing you weren't calling us asses. I consider education, because I am a mother of a 9 year old child, Gun Laws, because we have a right to bear arms, the second amendment, Economy, because I want my country, and my people to be earning what they have worked their butts off for, but not the other issues. Health-Care is basically free in America. If you're sick, you can go to a hospital, and make minimal payments to them. No one should have to pay for someone else's medicine. An old person, or another person needing medication, can pay for it themselves. There is a law, that you can pay a minimal fee, and as long as you keep paying said doctor, or hospital, no matter how small a payment you make, as long as you pay, it's okay.
My biggest issue is the war in Iraq. John McCain will fix it right, if he is elected, and I am voting for him.

I am not sure what it is that you are looking for, but I wouldn't say there are three "important" issues to focus on when it comes to a politician's political platform.

Everyone is different in opinion. What I might think is important, may be low on the ranks for you.

I am pretty new when it comes to an election and trying to decide who to vote for, so there is a website that asks you questions (explains what each answer means) and compares you with each candidates opinions on issues. They may not be dead on, but that is a good way of finding who agrees more where you think there should be change.

1) The willingness and ability of the candidate to stand up for , support and follow the constitution.
2) The candidate's ability to reduce the invasive influence of the ever expanding Federal Government, and move toward smaller government.
3) Resistance to instituting anything Socialist in nature.
