The problem with downloading free e-books, just like downloading music, is that the author doesn't get paid. You might be able to find some classics (copyright expired), but if you find a site that downloads newer books, my guess is that it's illegal.
Writers have to make a living too!
Check with your local library to see if they can help you with e-books.
