Memorial and Labor days are always set for a 3 day weekend, so why not Independence Day? During the longest days of the year, we stay up till it gets dark to watch fireworks only to have to go to work the next day (most years).
A Friday holiday would allow for recovery from partying and staying up late for the display.

I understand fully the significance of the particular date, and think it should be made well known why we celebrate. However, changing the day we get off work, or OBSERVE the holiday, would not detract from it's significance. Two of our greatest presidents we've ever had have their birthdays observed on a day different than the actual dates in order to give us a three day weekend. They were just as crucial a part of our country's greatness as was the Declaration of Independence.

I actually think that would make sense.

No one has made any arguments against this. While it is true that the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th, the actual document wasn't signed until August 2nd.

You made a good point with President's Day. It is a day of appreciation and respect for the office, but rarely does it fall on Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12th) or Washington's (Feb 22nd).

I think celebrating our Independence on the first Friday of July would work just as well, and would save a lot of headaches when it comes to scheduling a vacation.

I don't think will happen any time soon, however, as a majority of the public has been taught to associate a specific date with our Independence Day. Any politician would face strong opposition in introducing a bill to change the date.

Too bad.

Independence Day Observed

Because Memorial Day and Labor Day are both holidays that honor people, not a specific event.

"The Declaration of Independence, unanimously declared by the thirteen United States of America, was adopted by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776"

Because there is a specific date that is being celebrated, it can't be shifted to meet the needs/wants of party people.

A better solution would be to make July 5 a holiday too.

The significance of the date, July 4, is that it's at the top of the Declaration of Independence:

In Congress, July 4, 1776: The unanimous declaration of the 13 United States of America.

The date July 4th is symbolic. Some holidays are set for a certain weekday in the month and others are set to a specific date. I know lots of people who recognize Independence Day closer to the weekend, but the federal holiday is on July 4 and they'll never change that.

Because independence day is a specific date, July 4th. Sometimes it falls on a Friday or a Monday, other years it doesn't.

Because Independence Day is on July 4, and the 4th doesn't always fall on a weekend.

July 4th is Independence Day. Its not like Mother's Day where its the second Sunday of May or whatever.

Its like asking why aren't all holidays on Tuesday or something.

EDIT: President's Day is now...President's Day (all presidents). It used to be about Lincoln and Washington I believe...but now its to celebrate all presidents.

Because Memorial Day and Labor Day were designated to fall on their respective Mondays, irrespective of the actual date.

Independence Day acknowledges the anniversary of an actual event that took place on July 4, 1776 and is always observed on July 4.
